The Winter Guest

Written by Rickman and Sharman Macdonald (adapted from Macdonald's play), this film is a study in contrasts, a pensive portraiture of life; sparse and reflective, Rickman captures in it the human condition at it's most fragile, and therein finds beauty.

Chloe (Sandra Voe) and Lily (Sheila Reid) are two old women who like to attend strangers' funerals and Tom (Sean Biggerstaff) with Sam (Douglas Murphy) are two schoolboys who skip school to play on the beach and talk. It's February in a coastal Scottish village in what has been a colder than usual winter as witnessed by the sea being frozen over.

The Winter Guest Reviews. A dull, plodding exercise directed by actor Alan Rickman. Moving as flawlessly and gracefully across the movie screen as the snow on its mute, chilly Scottish landscape.

"The Winter Guest," based on a play by Sharman Macdonald, follows these four couples and listens to them. There isn't a lot of interaction between them, although Alex does bring Nita home, and she does talk with Frances.

The distraction of the Pinter-esque pauses and use of language notwithstanding, it's well acted (with child actors Murphy and Biggerstaff especially winning), sensitively directed and expressively.
